The seminar introduces some of the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of what has been framed in recent years as the multidisciplinary field of ‘environmental justice studies’ (Adamson, Gleason, and Pellow 2016). From an anthropological perspective, the seminar aims to critically investigate how current conflicts and crises, and their connected injustices intersect with issues of climate change, sustainability and environmental protection. The seminar, thus, picks up the provocative question of “Is racism an environmental threat?”, which was famously posed by anthropologist Ghassan Hage (2017), and connects it, among others, to questions of “critical environmental justice” (Naguib Pellow 2018) and more-than-human biopolitics (Pugliese 2020). The goal is to explore through ethnographic case studies, holistic approaches that contribute to a better understanding of the ongoing polycrisis (Morin and Kern 1999).
