Seminar | Fundamental Questions in Prehistoric Archaeology: Methods of Questioning, Reasoning & Knowledge Justification

Institute for Prehistoric Archaeology

Monday (October 13, 2025 – February 2, 2026)| 10.00 – 11.30

Philosophikum, Room S 90

What is archaeological knowledge? How is such knowledge produced and how does the community of archaeologists ensure its validity? In short: how does archaeological cognition and insight actually work and what methodological, source-critical and interpretative practices does it rely on? These and other key questions of scientific work in and with archaeology are at the center of Ulrich Veit's introductory volume “Grundfragen der Prähistorischen Archäologie: Eine Einführung in archäologische Frage- und Begründungsweisen”, newly published by UTB in 2025. In the seminar, we will try to read, discuss and understand this authoritative textbook together. There are no prerequisites for participation and the seminar is open to interested students of all semesters and subjects (in archaeology and beyond).
