Jöran Landschoff is a researcher in German Linguistics and MESH Research Fellow since June 2026. He is mainly interested in social and political matters that are construed in and via language, reaching from the formation of social identities and political ideologies to multimodal internet practices and opinion dynamics e.g., in the context of climate debates. Linguistically, he combines sociolinguistics and political linguistics within a discourse linguistic paradigm, focussing on Pragmatics, Semantics and Philosophy of Language, as well as mixed-methods approaches of qualitative analysis and corpus linguistics. In 2024, he finished his doctorate in the project A Transdisciplinary Model for Collective Decision Making: Linguistic and Physical Perspective (funded by the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities) at the University of Heidelberg. 

On the basis of a systems theoretical discourse analysis, his dissertation about the ‘climate debate on X ahead of the 2021 federal election in Germany’ investigates prevalent argumentative structures and opinion dynamics in the German debates on the transitions in energy supply and transport, as well as climate policies in general. Between 2024 and 2026, Jöran Landschoff worked as a research associate at the Universities of Klagenfurt and Graz and as an associated researcher at MESH as part of the project Just Futures? An Interdisciplinary Approach to Cultural Climate Models (CCM), specifically in WP2 (Modelling Climate Futures in Multimodal Social Media Discourse) with MESH researcher Dr Carolin Schwegler. This research investigates internet practices and multimodal ensembles and how they are utilised by various actors (activists, companies, politicians, etc.) on Instagram and X, while the underlying aim is to reveal linguistic and communicative modes of projecting, imagining, and defining futures.
