January 10, 2025 | 11:00 – 15:00 | Auerbach Library, MESH
Organised by Carolin Schwegler, Jöran Landschoff and the CCM team, with a methodological intro by Arran Stibbe
Are you interested in climate imaginaries and how users display their idea of climate futures on Instagram? We invite you to join the interdisciplinary team of the MESH-project Cultural Climate Models (CCM) for a dive into our social media dataset, which includes both visuals and text captions. In this workshop, Dr Carolin Schwegler and Jöran Landschoff will start with a very brief introduction into our project’s aims, focusing on CCM’s social media study. Our guest, Prof Dr Arran Stibbe, a world-leading ecolinguist, will provide a short introduction into ecolinguistic categories and the central objectives of positive discourse analysis (PDA). This intro is explicitly designed for interdisciplinary groups. PDA concentrates on positive usage of language that can provide alternatives to dominant climate change discourses but requires a discussion and deep reflection of the analysts’ (our) ecosophy. The main part of the workshop will centre the joint discussion and analysis of a set of examples well-suited for PDA. Against this backdrop, we will explore and discuss the application of an ecosophy in the context of the medial display of climate imaginaries. The workshop includes a one-hour lunch break; registration is required.
